SAP CPI vs. MuleSoft vs. Boomi: Which Integration Skill Is Worth Learning in 2026?
A finance team midway through an S/4HANA migration needs the new system talking to three separate things: a payroll vendor, a bank's SFTP server for outbound payment files, and an EDI feed from a distribution partner. None of that touches SAP's core configuration at all. It's integration work, and the architect assigned to it has to make a platform decision that quietly shapes the rest of her career: build it on SAP CPI, MuleSoft, or Boomi.
That choice matters more than most job postings let on. Learning one of these three well takes real time, and switching platforms mid-career is a heavier reset than picking up a second BI tool. Here's what actually separates them.
Three Platforms, Three Different Bets
SAP CPI, now sold as the Cloud Integration capability inside SAP Integration Suite, is built first for talking to SAP itself. IDoc adapters, pre-built content for S/4HANA and SuccessFactors, and free SAP-to-SAP connectivity make it the default inside an SAP shop, and a genuinely weak choice outside one. It's also worth knowing CPI is only the on-ramp: the same Integration Suite license includes API Management, Event Mesh, and Trading Partner Management, and a lot of CPI specialists end up picking up one of those as a second skill a couple of years in rather than staying pure iFlow developers forever. MuleSoft takes the opposite approach. It's API-led by design, with over 200 connectors and a developer-heavy workflow built around Anypoint Studio, and it shows up most often at large enterprises doing serious custom integration work regardless of which ERP they run. Boomi sits between the two on complexity: a visual, low-code builder, Boomi Flow for workflow automation on top of straight integration, and a track record of getting picked by mid-market teams that want something a smaller IT staff can actually maintain.

What the Skill Actually Pays
None of the three is a clear salary winner once you compare like for like. MuleSoft developers average $119,739 a year nationally on ZipRecruiter, with Glassdoor's figure running higher at $142,802 (ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, 2026). Boomi developers land close behind, averaging $129,794 on Glassdoor against a ZipRecruiter hourly figure around $57.57. SAP CPI work is usually priced by the hour rather than salaried outright, averaging $70.40 an hour on ZipRecruiter, which lands in a similar band once annualized.

The real difference isn't the number. It's the competition for that number. MuleSoft and Boomi both draw from a large, platform-agnostic integration talent pool. SAP CPI draws from a narrower one, people who also understand SAP's data model, which is exactly why a hard deadline changes the math. SAP's own mainstream maintenance window for SAP PI/PO, the older middleware most existing SAP shops still run, ends December 31, 2027 (McKinsol, 2026), and companies re-platforming onto Integration Suite before then aren't going to find enough SAP-literate integration talent sitting idle.

MuleSoft's path assumes genuine comfort with Anypoint Studio and DataWeave, its own transformation language running on a Java-based platform underneath, which is a real technical bar for someone starting cold. Boomi's associate track is the fastest to reach, in keeping with its low-code pitch. SAP's sits in between on raw difficulty, but its actual prerequisite isn't the exam content, it's already knowing your way around an SAP landscape well enough for IDoc and BAPI adapters to make sense on sight.
Which One's Actually Worth Learning
Starting from outside the SAP world entirely, MuleSoft is the safer default. It's platform-agnostic, the job pool is bigger, and the skill transfers regardless of which ERP a future employer happens to run. Boomi earns the pick if the ease-of-use pitch is genuinely what draws you in, or if mid-market IT roles are the actual target rather than large enterprise integration teams.
SAP CPI is the more defensible bet for a narrower group: people who already work inside SAP shops, or who are willing to build SAP context alongside the integration skill itself. That's a smaller starting audience, but it's backed by a deadline that isn't moving and a talent pool that hasn't caught up to it. And "SAP-native" doesn't mean "lesser tool" here. Gartner has named SAP a Leader in its iPaaS Magic Quadrant for six consecutive years running, most recently in 2026 (SAP News Center, 2026).
None of this means picking one closes the door on the others. Integration architects who've worked long enough tend to pick up a second platform eventually, usually because a job or an acquisition forced it rather than because they planned it that way. That's a fine place to end up. It's just a poor place to start, since a half-learned platform on a resume reads worse than no exposure to it at all.
