The Job Posting That Doesn't Mention PowerCenter Once


A hiring manager at a mid-size logistics company posts an integration developer role this month. The requirements list SQL, three named SaaS connectors, and Informatica IICS. PowerCenter isn't mentioned once. A candidate with eight years of PowerCenter experience applies anyway, assumes the skills transfer wholesale, and gets asked in the first round to explain how a Taskflow differs from a Workflow. That's a real gap, not a technicality, and it's showing up in enough postings now to be worth understanding on its own terms rather than as a footnote to a PowerCenter migration guide.


Most of what gets written about Informatica right now treats IICS as a waypoint on the way out of PowerCenter, a thing you learn only once you've decided to leave the old platform behind. Job postings increasingly disagree. A growing share list IICS as a standalone requirement, with no PowerCenter line at all, aimed at people who never touched the on-prem product and don't need to.


What Actually Makes IICS Different


Informatica Intelligent Cloud Services runs entirely in the browser, organized around an "org" rather than a repository someone installs on a server. The one piece of the old world that survives is the Secure Agent: a lightweight process installed inside a company's own network, specifically so IICS can still reach databases and file systems that were never meant to be exposed to the public internet. Everything else, connectors, transformations, taskflow orchestration, monitoring, runs from Informatica's cloud and is reachable from any browser with the right login.


That architecture is also why IICS ships with well over 50 connectors out of the box instead of the smaller, slower-to-update set PowerCenter carried. A SaaS platform like Salesforce or Workday was never going to get a stable on-premises connector maintained forever. A cloud-native platform can update one on its own release schedule instead of waiting for every customer's next upgrade cycle to catch up.

The Company Behind the Platform Just Changed


The context around IICS shifted in a way most training material hasn't caught up with yet. Salesforce agreed to acquire Informatica for roughly $8 billion in May 2025, folding IDMC, the broader platform IICS sits inside, into Salesforce's own Data Cloud roadmap. For anyone weighing whether to invest time in this specific toolset, that's a more useful signal than any single salary figure. A platform doesn't get bought for $8 billion by a company planning to wind it down. Salesforce has been explicit that the appeal is combining Informatica's integration and governance layer with Data Cloud's AI push, which points toward IICS skills becoming more embedded in a much larger ecosystem over the next few years, not less relevant.

Most of that sequence will look familiar to anyone who has built an ETL pipeline anywhere. The genuinely new material sits in the taskflow layer and in connector-specific quirks: a REST API connector fails differently than a database one does, and knowing which retry setting actually fixes a given failure mode is not something a PowerCenter background teaches on its own. A rate-limited API connector that silently drops records under load behaves nothing like a database connection timing out, and the fix for one does nothing for the other.

SQL and mapping instincts carry over directly from PowerCenter, Talend, or almost any other ETL background.
