AWS DevOps vs. Azure DevOps: Which Cloud Path Should You Learn in 2026?

A hiring manager at a mid-size fintech company posts two openings the same week, both titled "DevOps Engineer," both listing "3+ years, CI/CD, infrastructure as code" in the first line. One requires CodePipeline, CodeBuild, and CloudFormation. The other requires Azure Pipelines, Azure Repos, and Bicep. Same responsibilities on paper, two completely different toolchains, and whoever's deciding what to learn next has to pick a lane before knowing which company they'll end up working for.


The Market Still Leans AWS, Azure Is Closing Ground


Across several 2026 cloud-career trackers, AWS still holds the bigger share of DevOps job postings that name a specific platform, commonly cited in the mid-to-high 50 percent range. Azure has been the faster mover on growth, gaining ground fastest at large enterprises and government contractors already standardized on Microsoft 365 and Active Directory. Startups and cloud-native companies skew AWS more heavily still; regulated industries and public-sector work skew the other way.

Azure doesn't trail by much. A handful of 2026 salary comparisons put Azure-focused DevOps Engineers within roughly $10,000 to $15,000 of their AWS counterparts nationally, close enough that pay alone shouldn't decide this for you. Engineers who genuinely operate both stacks tend to out-earn single-platform specialists by a wider margin than either platform's premium over the other, but that's a second-platform problem to solve after year two or three, not a reason to split attention now.

The responsibilities read almost identically between the two ecosystems. Build a pipeline, deploy safely, manage infrastructure as code, catch a bad release before it reaches production. What changes is every tool you'd actually touch day to day.

Container orchestration follows the same pattern without needing its own table. AWS splits between ECS, its own opinionated scheduler, and EKS for standard Kubernetes; Azure's answer is AKS, which leans harder on Active Directory for cluster access control than either AWS option does. None of this is conceptually different work, it's the same job wearing a different vendor's paperwork. And the 11pm troubleshooting session looks different too: on AWS it usually starts in CloudWatch Logs and a CodeBuild run history page, on Azure it starts in the Pipelines run log and Application Insights instead. Same panic, different tabs open.

Two Certifications, Two Different Bets


AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Professional (DOP-C02) runs 75 questions in 180 minutes, needs a 750 out of 1000 to pass, and costs $300. Microsoft's Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) is shorter on paper, 40 to 60 questions in 150 minutes, but it isn't really one exam. Microsoft requires AZ-104 or AZ-204 first, so it's a two-certification commitment before you're actually done. Anyone studying for AZ-400 right now should also know Microsoft has a full content refresh scheduled for the exam in April 2026, so material written before that date is worth double-checking once the update lands.

Which One's the Better Bet With No Other Signal


If nothing else is pulling you in a direction, no current employer, no specific job posting, no existing cloud investment, AWS is the more defensible place to start. It has the bigger job pool, tooling that's been stable longer, and it's what the overwhelming majority of DevOps certification content, tutorials, and Stack Overflow answers are written against. That matters at 11pm when a pipeline breaks and you're troubleshooting alone.


Azure earns the pick when something outside the technology itself already decided for you. Your company runs on Microsoft 365 and Active Directory, you're chasing government or defense contracting work where Azure Government is standard, or a job you actually want lists Azure Pipelines as a hard requirement. Those aren't rare edge cases. They're common enough that "just learn AWS" isn't universally correct advice.


A smaller group of engineers end up fluent in both, usually because a job change forced the second platform on them rather than by original design. That's a fine long-term outcome and, per the multi-cloud pay premium above, a lucrative one. It's a poor starting strategy. Splitting study time across two toolchains before either one is solid tends to leave someone shaky in both instead of genuinely strong in one, and hiring managers can usually tell the difference in the first technical round.
